Unusual way to Blu-ray
Now that it looks like Blu-ray will win the disk format war over HD DVD, what Blu-ray player should you buy?
If you haven’t been following this tech battle, two rival high-definition formats emerged, like the VHS-BetaMax fight in the 1980s. Warner Bros. recently signed on with a format called Blu-ray, apparently tipping the scales to that format.
If you’re going to buy a high-def player, Don Lindich of SoundAdviceBlog has an interesting recommendation: Buy a Sony Playstation 3.
Huh?
Playstation 3, $400 or $500 depending on capacity, can play Blu-ray high-definition discs. And the Blu-ray format apparently isn’t finalized. When it is, Playstation has the ability to upgrade itself to the final format profile, unlike some Blu-ray players on the market now.
Of course, that advice is for people who just can’t wait to buy a high-def player. I’m inclined to wait and let the smoke clear on this format war and format development.
A further thought: Within five years, won’t we all be ordering our high-def movies directly from the Internet to our TVs, making a player obsolete?
