Extended ripoff

So, I get a letter in the mail the other day from Dell, which sold me my laptop computer about a year ago. It says my warranty will expire soon and I can get additional coverage for “only” $349.

Yikes!

What are the chances something will go wrong with my computer that would cost me $349? Not only are computers more reliable nowadays — if something is wrong, you’ll know it within the standard warranty period — but it’s a bad idea to buy such an expensive warranty on anything plummeting in value. No matter what computer you have, its value is plummeting.

I’m happy with the computer — an XPS M1210, if you care — but am disappointed at that extended warranty offer, especially at such an outrageous price.

  1. Wow. That’s almost criminal! I can think of no expense other than having to replace the entire LCD screen that would make such a warranty cost worth it. Plus, if you shop around, you can get a brand new laptop easily for under $1,000. One note… I always recommend a three year warranty to my clients. I consider one year warranties to be inadequate. Often, computer vendors offer only 1 yr. as the default.
