Spitzer spat

You’ve probably heard by now that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has apparently been frequenting prostitutes. Story.

Ughhh.

We consumer advocates usually steer clear of political news, but many of us – regardless of political affiliation – viewed Spitzer as a champion of consumers against well-moneyed and powerful corporations – at least during some of his crusades. Spitzer put ethics at the cornerstone of his aggressive investigations and into his administration as the top official in New York.

But apparently the emperor has no clothes.

This misstep means much more symbolically than it does legally. He’s unlikely to be prosecuted, according to news reports. Like during President Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades, the scandal will probably now overshadow any good that was done – at least in the short term. Maybe more sad, it feeds cynicism that says you can’t trust politicians.

Please save your political rantings, but constructive comments about Spitzer as a consumer advocate are certainly welcomed.
